There's something really weird happening in New England these days. The New England Patriots are winning games without Tom Brady in at starting quarterback. That isn't supposed to be happening. As soon as Brady went down with that knee injury, their season was supposed to be over. But Matt Cassel, the man who never started a game in college is leading them, and more importantly, winning some games.
So who would have seen this coming? All of the injuries combined with an aging defense, but they are still pulling off a 6-4 record and they are right in the middle of the playoff hunt. So there are a lot of reasons that they are still playing well but i think the biggest one is Matt Cassel. He came out and showed that he can still play. He is also coming off of a career game. And this isn't even a rookie level career game, this is the kind of game a hall of famer would like to have. In the Pats last game against the Jets, Cassel threw for 400 yards and also rushed for over 60 yards. He was the first player in the history of the NFL to do that. And it was only his 9th start. Even though his team lost the game, he clearly outplayed one of the greatest of all time, Brett Favre. He has been playing solid games all year long but he is flying under the radar because he isn't Tom Brady.
But what does this mean for his career in the future. When Brady comes back, New England is going to start him again, there's no reason that they wouldn't. But what does that mean for Cassel? Will he really want to come back to New England as a backup after showing everyone that he can play this well on a consistent basis? He might get an offer from some team that is struggling to find a good starting quarterback, like the San Francisco 49ers, and take a starting job there. That's what i think is going to happen. He is too good of a player to be a backup, he has shown that. I would expect to see Matt Cassel wearing different colors next year, he's earned it.
